Top 5 Tips for Crushing Your Interview

1. Do your research on the company

Founder, formation date, different offices, number of employees in the office you’re interviewing at, who runs that office, recent company accomplishments/accolades/news

2. KNOW THE ROLE

Fully comprehend the job description, required skills, and experience. When you understand what the role will entail, you’re going to be able to prepare with your relatable experience.

3. Connect on LinkedIn with the hiring managers

a. One of the best ways to stand out is connecting with the Hiring Managers on LinkedIn before the interview. This will not only set you apart from most by being proactive, but it will also begin the process of putting a face to a name. Of course, you’re going to want to make sure your LinkedIn is sharp and represents the type of professional that would excel in this role

b. You’ll also be able to build rapport by researching Hiring Managers Alma Matters, hometowns, etc on LinkedIn. Maybe they are from a place you used to vacation, your aunt lives or went to the same college you went to. A lot of ammunition to start off the interview on a great note if you really know who is interviewing you.

4. Have SMART questions prepared

a. Do not let this interview be you talking to them. You should be interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you. This should be a conversation (and it doesn’t even matter with who is more desperate than the other). By asking smart questions, you will keep the conversation going, keep Hiring Managers engaged and also make you appear more qualified than you may be. DO NOT ask them what “their favorite part of the job is”, or some other vague softball question where the hiring manager can just say whatever needed to answer the question. That won’t benefit anyone and will make you look unprepared.

5. Understand Next Steps and be proactive with Follow Up

a. So many people leave the interview hearing, “you’ll hear from us” and never do. Understand the specifics of the follow up. What are next steps? Who will reach out? When will I hear back by? Knowing these specifics, you’ll be able to follow up if the follow up expectations set are not met.

b. Additionally, be sure to follow up with each person you met during the interview. Send them personal emails, not blanket statements copied and pasted (they will share follow ups with one another), and ensure each email highlights a specific detail that was covered in your interview. This will show attention to detail and ability to properly follow up.
